Softball in Gori Region (July 17, 2009)
On July 17, thirty Georgian students stepped up to the plate for a morning of softball instruction as part of a camp for internally displaced children. Volunteers from the U.S. Embassy, along with local softball players, traveled to Ateni Gorge and taught the campers how to throw, catch, and swing bats. During their own game, each camper had a chance to hit and run the bases while others played positions in the field. Even the camp director joined in the fun, swinging for the fences and hitting a home run during his turn at bat. Athletic activities such as the day's softball event compliment the camp's main focus on English language training.
