Marine Corps Commandant visits Georgia (August 20-21)
General James T. Conway, Commandant of the Marine Corps, travelled to Georgia on August 20-21. This was a long- planned visit. General Conway met with President Saakashvili and government officials, including the Defense and Foreign Ministers and the National Security Council Secretary. The Government of Georgia will contribute an infantry battalion to Afghanistan for service under U.S. command in the international Security Assistance Force (ISAF). At the Ministry of Defense, General Conway and Minister Sikharulidze discussed the Marine training program for the Georgian troops before they head to Helmand province in southern Afghanistan early next year.
