Ambassador Tefft in Georgia- S. Ossetia Conflict Buffer Zone to Express Importance of Preserving Cultural Heritage

Ambassador Tefft joined a group made of senior Georgian government officials and European representatives on a visit to Tkviavi and Nikozi, two areas damaged during the August 2008 conflict, to review ongoing efforts to support cultural preservation work in the buffer zone.
The group surveyed damage at a 10th century monastery in Nikozi which received multiple rocket fire during the conflict, destroying a historic convent, where four nuns lived. The Ambassador speaking to reporters referred to the long standing American support for Georgian cultural heritage preservation the through multiple projects of the Ambassador’s Cultural Heritage Fund and pledged to work with partners to look for opportunities to continue that support.
